Independent Living Resource (ILR)

Independent Living Resource is a non-profit organization, which promotes the full participation and inclusion of disabled persons in community life. Referred to as an Independent Living Center, the agency is part of a network of similar organizations throughout the nation. Serving Contra Costa County & Solano County We endeavor to:

  • Provide advocacy and support
  • Create an accessible community free of physical & attitudinal barriers
  • Advocate complete social and political integration All of ILR services are free and available to consumers and their families who reside in Contra Costa and Solano Counties. All Services are provided regardless of race, religion, income, age, gender, or type of disability. Please call for an appointment to see a service specialist. We maintain a scent free environment. Please refrain from wearing fragrances when visiting our offices.
  • Access Services- ILR provides accessibility education, surveys and consultations regarding compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and other legislation, as well as advocacy services
  • Assistive Technology - ILR provides information & referral regarding a wide range of equipment and devices and coordinates efforts on behalf of consumers to facilitate attainment and use of needed items and related services. Encompasses any equipment, devices, structural modifications or service that enhance the independence of people with disabilities.
  • Benefits Advocacy - Staff provide information, referral, intervention and representation for people who are having difficulties with benefits programs.
  • Community Education - ILR conducts educational events and activities, and offers technical assistance to the community in areas related to disability. Special topic speakers, sensitivity training, accessibility surveys and consultation regarding compliance with relevant state & federal regulations are available through the center.
  • Employment Services - Pre-employment counseling, resume development and job placement assistance.
  • Housing Advocacy - ILR Advocates provide information, education, outreach and advocacy in support of consumers who are having problems locating accessible housing. Housing related issues, such as landlord/tenant issues, mediation, roommates (shared housing), etc. is provided.
  • Independent Living Skills - Practical training in the development of individualized skills and knowledge that encourage maximum independence.
  • Information & Referral - Staff assist consumers, assess their needs and match them with appropriate resources in the community. A reference library is also maintained, which offers information about services, products and community resources of interest to people with disabilities, seniors, other service providers and professionals. Staff also assist, support and offer consultation to consumers' families.
  • Peer Support - Consumers learn to deal with the problems of personal and social adjustment, social skills and interpersonal relationships. Services include individual, family & group counseling.
  • Systems Advocacy - Staff advise, present options and assist people with disabilities and seniors to eliminate discriminatory practices and barriers that prevent access and inclusion in the community.
  • Youth Program - The B.U.D.D.Y Program serves youth of all ages: transitioning into school, through the K-12 system, and beyond. ILR serves students, their families and those agencies which serve them. Services include consulting and advocacy at IEPs, parent and teacher consultancies and trainings, disability awareness in-services for the classroom, school assemblies, and paid* mentoring internships for MDUSD WorkAbility 1 program participants (* student interns receive minimum wage).
