Your child has just been diagnosed with a developmental, medical, psychological, learning or other issue - what now? A child’s diagnosis can bring a wide range of emotional responses, among which you might feel:

Sadness/Grief: You may be mourning the loss of the child that you thought you had. You are having to completely adjust your vision and expectations of what the future may hold. You’re not sure if you’re going to be able to handle such a big challenge.

Anger: This is NOT fair! You and your child don’t deserve this!

Relief: Finally, your child’s struggles have a name and you can begin to learn more and get some help.

Worry: Who will help me? How will our family manage? I am really capable of dealing with this? We want you to know that you are not alone. We want to encourage and support you in a variety of ways. Finding others who understand your experiences will help you to navigate this uncertain and very challenging world. While each child and each family is different, whether your child is diagnosed with a learning disability or a rare genetic medical disorder, connecting with other parents with similar experiences can help you feel not quite so alone in the struggle.
