A Closer Look - Educational Therapy

Judith Stubbs, L.H., is an educational therapist who works with individuals who exhibit learning disabilities, differences or problems.

As a parent of a special needs child and a former special education teacher in the public schools, she provides you both a sympathetic ear and vital information to help you and your child.

She is also the director of the learning center, A Closer Look, where the diagnostic testing and prescriptive follow-up prescriptive teaching is done.

I perform work as an educational therapist and liason advocate.

As a special education teacher and educational therapist, I do

  • academic and developmental assessments,
  • individualized prescriptive tutoring and teaching.
  • I will make observations of a child in educational and social settings at school, working with the family to come up with an appropriate educational plan for tutoring sessions and work with the school to see that the child is in an academic performance or behavior
  • I will help family ask for and prepare for SST meeting (Student Study Team), IEP meeting, Individual Education Plan, or 504 plan for the child where appropriate.

This method is successful, as I am the "neutral" party, keeping everyone focused on the child's needs.

    Diagnostic Testing and Assessment
A thorough assessment is done by

  • Observing the student
  • gathering information from parents and teachers
  • through formalized testing

    Remedial, Individualized Teaching

Based on the above assessment, a prescriptive, individualized remedial program is made up and implemented either in a one-to-one or very small group setting (2-4 students).

    Supportive, Safe Environment

A high priority is that the student feel he is in a supportive, safe environment to learn new information and will be open to using coping strategies.

Liaison Services With the School and Student/Parent Rights

Many students with learning differences are misunderstood and not supported in the classroom.

We make on-site observations in the student's classroom, establishing a good rapport with those involved in the student's education.

Information about the student's learning style and needs is communicated so that the therapist and teacher can work as partners to facilitate the student's learning.
