A word about Parking. Please share a ride if possible. There are well over 350 people coming and only 250 parking spaces available at the church.
If you arrive after 8:45...or the parking at the church is full. The Lucky's in El Paseo (across the street) has parking behind the store. I am told by the manager at Lucky's and the property management that they do not tow cars unless they have been left 24 hours.
If you use this as a parking option, be sure to park where the store customers are unaffected.
Remember, lunch is on your own. You will be provided with a map of lunch options at the event with their phone numbers where you may call ahead to order or bring your own.
If you registered after 10/30, there will not be enough books to distribute at the time of the conference. If you do not receive a book at the conference, we will order them and you will be able to pick them up upon arrival to PHP.
We are very busy preparing for the conference.
Nathan Ory describes challenging behavior as that which involves disruptive actions by someone who does not respond as expected, regardless of another person’s attempts to redirect or calm him. He may employ the usual procedures of extra prompting, guidance, motivation, training, or explicit direction or correction—all to no avail. This person simply becomes more passive, more resistive, more emotionally agitated, or more violent in response.
Nathan leaves the jargon behind and opens our minds to the possibilities for people with challenging behavior by filling us with recommendations that can be used in every area of life to orchestrate a new symphony for those we love and serve.
A registered psychologist, Nathan Ory has worked in Victoria, British Columbia since 1978 with children and adults with mentally disabling conditions. He has specialized in serving persons with intellectual disabilities and the developmental disabilities of autism spectrum and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders; extremely challenging behavior, and/or diagnosis with a concurrent mental illness.
Nathan presents spirited workshops and seminars for parents and professionals on a regular basis. Now you have an opportunity to benefit from such an event offered right here in San Jose, CA!
- Part one: Why people with intellectual disabilities and/or autism have challenging behavior.
- Part two: Overcoming resistive behavior and power struggles in people with intellectual disabilities and/or autism.
- Part three: How to support people who have trouble with transitions, impulsive and stuck behavior. (To be continued on day two.)
- Part four (Continued from previous day): How to support people who have trouble with transitions, impulsive and stuck behavior.
- Part five: How to work with and survive emotionally fragile and reactive behavior.
- Part six: How to maintain peaceful relationships with people who display loss of self-control with violent, destructive, and aggressive behavior.
Who should attend? Parents, direct care workers, educators, therapists, and anyone who cares for or about someone with challenging behaviors that are a result of a developmental disability, autism spectrum disorder or fetal alcohol syndrome.
Excerpt from Nathan's book… ”Challenging behavior involves disruptive actions by someone who does not respond as expected regardless of another person’s attempts to redirect or calm him/her.”
“…He (Nathan Ory) uses rich, graphic metaphors that teach directly to the unconscious; insightful concepts that stimulate the intellect; and clear, practical, step-by-step interventions…”
–Donald T. Saposnek, Dept. of Psychology, UCSC
