Down Syndrome

PHP's Silicon Valley Down Syndrome Network is a group of families with children with Down Syndrome who support one another, exchange information, and educate each other on the unique needs involved in raising a child with Down Syndrome. We hold monthly dinners (3rd Saturdays), bi-weekly playgroups (2nd & 4th Saturdays), "Around the Table" parent discussion groups (4th Saturdays), Mom's Night Out, and Tween/Teen gatherings. We occasionally sponsor educational events for parents and caregivers as well. These events happen at a variety of locations. (We are in the process of getting the information posted on PHP's recently updated website. 2/28/08)

Our monthly dinners are usually on the third Saturday of each month. These dinners are a time for networking and connecting with other families. Some dinners also have speakers on various topics of mutual interest to families of children with Down Syndrome. The entire family is invited. Please check the Event listing to confirm location and date. Sometimes we gather at local family-friendly restaurants or local parks and sometimes at Parents Helping Parents. The meetings 2008: 1/19, 2/16, 3/15, 4/19, 5/17, 6/21, 7/19, 8/16, 9/20, 10/18, 11/15, and 12/20.

New Parent? Parents Helping Parents has a Down Syndrome Packet for parents who just gave birth or are expecting. If includes resources and information about Down Syndrome, Parents Helping Parents, SVDSN, California's early intervention program (Early Start), and more. This is an excellent resource for new families with information on medical needs, early intervention etc. We also have Libby Kumin's new book Early Communication Skills for Children with Down Syndrome and Joan Medlin's book, The Down Syndrome Nutritional Handbook. Click on the PHP Library link and search under Down Syndrome for a complete list of our over 120 resources on Down Syndrome.

PHP's Silicon Valley Down Syndrome Network held its Third Annual Bay Area Buddy Walk on October 20, 2007. We hope you will join us this year! The Buddy Walk has established itself as the premier advocacy event for Down Syndrome. For more information, please visit http://www.bayareabuddywalk.com/

SVDSN also have a playgroup for children who are 5 and under as well as an elementary school group. These are a great opportunity for children with Down syndrome to meet others like them and create lifelong friendships.

For information about our meetings or how to join this group contact PHP at the phone number above and we will connect you with the group.
