Eden Housing

The mission of Eden Housing is to build and maintain high quality, well-managed, service-enhanced affordable housing communities that meet the diverse needs of lower income families, seniors, and persons with disabilities.

For 50 years, Eden has demonstrated that safe, decent, affordable homes provide a platform for families to succeed. Our homes are the launching pad for children to go to college and families to get ahead, and a landing place for seniors to age in place with dignity, courtesy and respect.

Eden has worked in partnership with cities and local community partners to develop or acquire more than 10,600 homes in communities throughout California, currently serving a diverse population of 22,000 low-income residents from all cultures and backgrounds.  Since our humble beginnings, more than 100,000 people have come home to an Eden community.

Our vision is for everyone to have access to safe, decent, affordable housing. We believe that housing is a basic human necessity that is essential to everyday life and future success.

We serve very low, low and moderate-income families, seniors, veterans, people living with physical, mental, or developmental disabilities, and the formerly homeless.

Our History

Eden Housing was founded in 1968 by six community activists who were greatly concerned about the lack of non-discriminatory affordable housing in Alameda County. These pioneers, working out of makeshift “headquarters” such as local coffee shops, were initiated into affordable housing development by rehabilitating six older homes in Oakland for first time homebuyer families. Their next project was much larger — development of the 150-unit Josephine Lum Lodge for seniors in Hayward.

In the mid-1980’s, to guarantee that our properties remain affordable and professionally maintained long-term, Eden incorporated an affiliate property management company, Eden Housing Management, Inc. (EHMI). In the mid-1990’s, Eden expanded to provide free onsite resident support services through Eden Housing Resident Services, Inc.

This information is for rental properties managed by Eden Housing Management (EHMI) and/or properties owned by Eden Housing but are managed by a third party management company.

EHMI does not rent from a central location.  Our properties have waiting lists which vary in length.  Some properties may have multiple waiting lists according to rent levels.  Some properties may also have different rent income requirements.  In order to obtain an application for housing, you must call each property directly.  The manager can answer questions regarding apartment availability, rent, income requirements or restrictions, and how to obtain an application for housing.  To access the Housing Hotline, please call (510) 247-8141.

HOUSING WITHOUT SERVICES IS NOT A LONG-TERM SOLUTION.

When residents find lasting housing stability, only then can they begin to increase their quality of life and find opportunity. Housing is the foundation, but we combine it with access to numerous services that help with utility bills, facilitate access to healthcare, manage transportation, ensure food security, and much more.

Since 1995, Eden Housing has created pathways out of poverty by promoting housing stability and programming that helps residents reach their goals on a path to personal and economic empowerment. Our services are custom-designed for youth to seniors, individuals and families, those with limited English language skills, and people with special needs.

Since 1995, Eden Housing has provided a wide range of supportive services and enrichment programs designed to meet the needs of our diverse resident population. Our individual-focused programs are offered at 100% of our managed properties, in response to the unique needs of each community.

We believe that housing is the foundation for life change. In addition to promoting housing stability, our programs include:

• Education – after-school academic, enrichment and recreation programs in a structured learning environment focusing on youth ages 5 to 17. Family engagement is a critical component for the success of our youth.  As part of our Expanded Learning (after school) Programs, family members are offered support and training on how to become involved and advocate for their child’s educational development. Also support for adults in finding employment and building job skills to advance their careers.
• Technology Access– technology learning opportunities and broadband access for residents of all ages.
• Scholarship Program – financial assistance for higher education and vocational training.
• Economic Empowerment – financial workshops, match savings programs, and individual financial coaching for adults.
• Health and Wellness – healthcare access, mental health resources, exercise and nutrition classes, and other preventive programming to promote active aging and healthy lives.
• Community Engagement – programs and events to encourage socialization and build community amongst residents.
