Family Supportive Housing – San Jose Family Shelter
SAN JOSÉ FAMILY SHELTER
We provide temporary housing and targeted support to single- and two-parent families who are experiencing homelessness.
BRIDGES AFTERCARE
We extend AfterCare support to qualifying families, after they move into permanent housing, to lay the foundation for long-term independence.
The primary service we provide families is a private room and three meals a day. Working in conjunction with outside businesses, organizations, and individuals, we provide many other important services in addition to food and shelter.
Family Supportive Housing, Inc. relies on over 45 church groups and 1,000 volunteers each year. We view them as an integral part of the team. Without our wonderful volunteers, we would be unable to offer the quality of care we provide to families in crisis.
Services for Children
- Tutoring: Volunteers provide one-on-one tutoring for children in the evening. All school age children attend tutoring and educational activities on week nights all year round.
- Voyager Child Care Program: Pre-school activities to develop cognitive and socialization skills.
- We created our Voyager Child Development Center (Voyager) to provide reliable, quality, onsite childcare for infants and pre-school children at our San José Family Shelter. Voyager is State licensed and free of charge to families staying at our Shelter.
- School Readiness Program: Head Start offers on site preschool for children age 3-5. San Jose Unified Schools District assists families in placing children into elementary schools.
- After School Activity Program: Activities provided by the Girl Scouts and evening tutoring program.
- Activities and Celebrations: Monthly birthday parties, holiday and special occasion celebrations. Many weekend activities by volunteers.
- Health Care Professionals: Weekly Health Van.
Services for Adults
- Intensive Case Management: Case Management is the most important service we offer. Families receive counseling each week in order to identify needs, focus on goals, and gain access to community services. Case Managers direct the client to our supportive services.
- On-Staff Employment Specialist: Courses include Employment Assistance, Resume Workshop and Job Searching Skills.
- On-Staff Housing Specialist: Assists families in identifying and obtaining permanent housing in the area.
- Personal Enrichment Classes: Parenting, Nutrition, Money Management, and ESL.
- Computer Classes: Software training provided by Cisco volunteers.
- Housing Referrals and Assistance: Case Managers help residents obtain and retain permanent housing.
- Support Groups: Narcotics Anonymous, Alcoholics Anonymous, Anger Management and Domestic Violence support and referral.

In the last fiscal year, we served families from the greater San José area, Campbell, Gilroy, Hollister, Marina, Milpitas, Mountain View, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Sunnyvale and other South Bay cities. Close to 60% of our Shelter residents are children under 18.
