The National Center for Learning Disabilities’ (NCLD) mission is to ensure success for all individuals with learning disabilities in school, at work and in life. We:

  • Connect parents and others with resources, guidance and support so they can advocate effectively for their children.
  • Deliver evidence-based tools, resources and professional development to educators to improve student outcomes.
  • Develop policies and engage advocates to strengthen educational rights and opportunities.

NCLD provides essential information to parents, professionals and individuals with learning disabilities, promotes research and programs to foster effective learning, and advocates for policies to protect and strengthen educational rights and opportunities.
Since its beginning, NCLD has been led by passionate and devoted parents committed to creating better outcomes for children, adolescents and adults with learning disabilities.

The Anne Ford and Allegra Ford Scholarships offer financial assistance to two graduating seniors with documented learning disabilities (LD) who are pursuing post-secondary education.  The Anne Ford Scholarship was first awarded in 2002; in 2009, with a generous donation from Anne’s daughter, Allegra, the award was renamed the Anne Ford and Allegra Ford Scholarship and granted to two students.

Beginning 2012, we are offering two separate scholarships, the Anne Ford Scholarship and Allegra Ford Scholarship.

Is NCLD Now ‘Understood’?

No. NCLD and 14 other nonprofits collaborated to create Understood.org, a digital destination for parents of children with learning and attention issues. Visit Understood.org to learn more.

But NCLD doesn’t only work to empower parents. Its mission also includes empowering young adults, transforming schools and advocating for equal rights and opportunities of people with learning and attention issues. In addition to Understood, NCLD also operates Friends of Quinn, Get Ready to Read!, the LD Navigator and the RTI Action Network.

The critical transition after high school can be a daunting experience for many young adults with learning and attention issues. Many find themselves asking where they should go to college, what career path they should choose, or wonder how to find support and resources.

NCLD hopes to empower young adults with learning and attention issues through our initiatives, including an online community, leadership opportunities, and research. If you are interested in building your leadership skills, taking action to protect the rights of students across the country, using your voice to inspire others, or connecting with other young adults, check out our initiatives below.
