Special Skaters Adaptive Skating Program
- The Oakland Ice Center/Sharks Ice proudly offers a learn to skate program which has been developed especially for athletes with special physical and developmental challenges. Emphasizing fun and safety, the Special Skater program helps to improve balance and coordination which promotes an “I can do it!” attitude that carries over into other aspects of the participant’s life. With the assistance of volunteers, skaters develop skills, make new friends and experience a new found freedom and sense of accomplishment.

SCHOOL DAY ADAPTED PE SKATING PROGRAM
While the benefits of physical activity have long been acknowledged in the general population, we recognize the increased need for physical activity as an additional therapeutic choice to enhance current and traditional behavioral interventions. The Oakland Ice Center Operated by Sharks Ice now offers a School Day Adapted PE Skating Program to students with cognitive and physical limitations who have limited access to such activities.
The benefits of ice skating can increase attention span, social skills, stamina, posture, self-regulation, and overall body awareness while decreasing aggression and other less desirable behaviors. The Oakland Ice Center School Day Adapted PE Program will work with your school to offer an integrated, goal-oriented program combining skating skills with behavioral goals and daily life skills.
